Amalaki Ekadashi fasting story

 Significance of Amalaki Ekadashi:

Dharmaraja Yudhishthira said: O Janardan! You have narrated a beautiful description of Vijaya Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Falgun. Now what is the name of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Falgun month? And what is his method? Please you tell me.

Shri Bhagwan said: O king, the name of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Falgun month is Amalaki Ekadashi. By observing this fast, all sins are destroyed, and due to its effect, the result of donating one thousand cows is obtained. By observing this fast, all sins are destroyed. O king, now let me tell you about the legend narrated by Maharishi Vashishtha to King Mandhata, you listen to it carefully.

Amalaki Ekadashi fasting story

King Mandhata said that O Vashistha! If you have mercy on me, then tell the story of such a fast, which will benefit me. Maharishi Vashistha said that O king, I describe the fast of Amalaki Ekadashi, which is the best of all fasts and ultimately gives salvation. This Ekadashi occurs in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Falgun.

There was a city named Vaidish, in which Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras lived with the four Varnas Anand. The sound of Vedas always resonated in that city and there was no one sinner, wicked and atheist in that city. A Chandravanshi king named Chaitrath used to reign in that city. He was very learned and righteous. No one was poor or miser in that city. All the

townspeople were devotees of Vishnu and women and men of age old age used to observe fast on Ekadashi.

Once upon a time Amalaki Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Falgun month came. On that day the king, subjects and children and old people all observed a joyful fast. The king along with his subjects went to the temple and established a complete Kumbh and started worshiping Dhatri / Amla with incense, lamp, naivedya, Pancharatna etc. and thus started praising..

O Dhatri! You are the form of Brahma, you are born by Brahma and you are the destroyer of all sins, salutations to you. Now accept my prayer. You are honored by Shri Ram Chandraji, I pray you, so you destroy all my sins. In that temple everyone awakened at night.

During the night a fowler came there, who was extremely sinful and abusive. He used to support his family by killing souls. Extremely distraught with hunger and thirst, the fowler sat in a corner of the temple to see this awakening and listened to the story of Lord Vishnu and Ekadashi greatness. In this way, like other human beings, he too spent the whole night awake.

As soon as everyone went to their house in the morning, then the fowler also went to her house. He went home and had dinner. After some time, the fowler died.

But due to the fasting and awakening of that Amalaki Ekadashi, he was born in the house of King Viduratha and was named Vasurath. When he was young, he started following 10 thousand villages with Chaturangini army and being full of money and grains.

He was like the sun in brilliance, like the moon in radiance, like Lord Vishnu in valor and like earth in forgiveness. He was extremely religious, truthful, karmaveer and a devotee of Vishnu. He treated the people equally. It was his daily duty to give charity.

One day the king went for hunting. By luck, he forgot the way and due to lack of direction, he slept under a tree in the same forest. After a while, the hill Mlechha came there and seeing the king alone, hit him, ran towards the king saying the word kill. Mlechha started saying that this evil king has killed many relatives like our mother, father, son, grandson etc. and expelled him from the country, so he must be killed.

Having said this, Mlechha ran to kill that king and threw many types of weapons at him. All those weapons would have been destroyed as soon as they fell on the king's body and his blow seemed like a flower. Now the weapons of those Mlechhas reversed and started attacking them, due to which they started falling unconscious. At the same time a divine woman was born from the body of the king. The woman was very beautiful, but her forehead was crooked, a red-red fire was coming out of her eyes, due to which she looked like another period.

The woman ran to kill the Mlechhas and within a short time she brought all the Mlechchas to the cheeks of Kaal. When the king woke up, seeing the Mlechhas dead, he said that who has killed these enemies? Who is my friend in this forest? He was just thinking that there was a voice from Akash: O king! Who can help you in this world other than Lord Vishnu? Hearing this voice, the king came to his kingdom and started ruling happily.

Maharishi Vashistha said that O king! This was the effect of fasting on Amalaki Ekadashi. Those who observe a fast on this Amalaki Ekadashi are successful in every task and finally go to Vishnuloka.

Amalaki Ekadashi is also called Rangbharni Ekadashi in Brij, Kunj Ekadashi in Shrinathdwara and Khatu Ekadashi in Khatu Nagari. Amla tree is worshiped on this Ekadashi.
